Felix Baumgartner had made a historic jump breaking the record of longest free fall jump. While he was shattering the record, he also set another record. His jump attracted the most number of live viewers on YouTube to date. There are 8 million YouTube viewers watching the live cast of the jump.
To put this in perspective, this is 16-fold increase from earlier record of 500,000 viewers watching London 2012 Olympic Games, and it took less than 3 months to break the earlier simultaneous streaming record.

What about comparing it with TV viewership? 8 million viewers is enough to rank Baumgartner's jump on successful TV sitcom finale. Just to give you an idea, 8 million viewers is more than CBS crime drama Medium received (7.8 million) on its finale episode and also ranks higher than NBC Law & Order series finale (7.8 million) according to Wikipedia.
What is remarkable is how fast YouTube is growing as mainstream media. Even a couple of years ago, YouTube was considered as a site for amateurs-created candid video or pirated content. But now it is not uncommon to see professionally created and marketed content premiering on YouTube.
With Gangnam Style finding 466 million viewers within 3 months, YouTube has become a global media network.
